First friendship at emory
|
During my first days in Emory, I sometimes felt scared and overwhelmed because I had no idea of what would be next. So, I spent most of my time on the phone with my friends from Puerto Rico and feeling bad for myself because I didn't know anyone here. That quickly changed on my first day here. I remember sitting in the orientation table for the HUES program for minority students interested in science fields, and meeting everyone in the table. There was a girl who said she was from Wisconsin, and after I mentioned I was from Puerto Rico, she rapidly turned to me and started speaking to me in Spanish. I looked at her shocked, and she started laughing. I remember her saying "My parents are Mexican, so I understand you." The smile I instantaneously had on my face was worthless. I had found someone who understood me and could relate to me. In one week we became best friends, and she has never failed me since. She is really someone I am grateful for everyday. When the going gets tough at Emory she makes sure that I survive, and she always cheers me up when I am down. We have more in common than what I have in common with most friends back home. She really helped me start the year in a perfect way.
